TimTam vs Theragun – “Massage Gun-Down”

Are you looking for a well-rounded comparison of the two popular percussion massager “guns” TimTam and Theragun?

Then look no further!

Because in this review I will be taking a close look at the TimTam Power Massager v1.5 and the Theragun G3 Pro.

So when you have finished reading this, you will have a much better understanding of the products and be able to make an informed choice!

Both TimTam and Theragun belong to this new kind of handheld massagers that people have been raving about for some time now.

You could say that they look like a repurposed jigsaw or a gun which is why some people refer to them as massage guns.

Since an NBA sports star was seen using the Theragun at a match (back in 2017 I believe) all kinds of athletes, therapists and massage enthusiasts alike have been wanting to get their hands on one of these massage guns.

There is already an impressive amount of anecdotal evidence that these massager guns help to alleviate muscle aches, knots, tightness, and tension.

While it seems clear to me that people are generally very positive towards these new massage guns, there is nothing new about the idea of a handheld massager.

Handheld percussion or vibration massage devices have been around for a long time. Similarly, it has been known for a long time that using them can have many potential benefits.

Even NASA has been using a device like this to prevent bone loss in astronauts.

Before this new “gun design” the popular design was like you see on the Purewave CM7 (read my review here).

TimTam Power Massager v1.5

Endorsed by many professional athletes, the TimTam Power Massager v1.5 is a very powerful tool that quickly eliminates muscle pain, stiffness, and soreness.

The industrial-grade motor in the TimTam delivers 2500 powerful strokes per minute, so you won’t have to worry about getting into even the thickest of muscle tissue.

Just by looking at this image my traps crave massage πŸ™‚

Spending as little as five minutes using the massager can give you a complete treatment of pretty much all areas of your body.

You can see a list of the recommended areas to use the massager on the official product page here.

If comparing to the time you would spend treating your entire body with foam rolling and/or stretching the TimTam massager will help you save up a lot of time!

Besides relieving sore muscles, the massager can potentially 1) speed up recovery by dispersing built-up lactic acid and increasing blood flow and 2) increase athletic performance by reducing muscle stiffness/tightness.

UPDATE: TimTam has a new model named “Power Massager v2.0” coming out soon. You can preorder it here and save 100 dollars. If you consider waiting, know that TimTam is discounting their v1.5 massager because of the new model coming out soon.

Theragun G3Pro

Theragun G3Pro is a premium handheld massager that similar to the TimTam is able to give powerful and deep massages for pretty much any of your muscles.

It is the third iteration from Theragun released in January 2019 and improving upon several things. Its predecessor the G2Pro has been quoted as:

“A revolution in muscle pain relief and an essential tool in recovery”

So taking into consideration that the G3Pro is an improvement, I think you can rest assured that this is a very powerful tool.

It has the two different speed options of either 1750 or 2400 RPM which according to the founder is the optimal speeds for muscle recovery. It can withstand up to 60 lbs / 27 kg of pressure

Don’t let the relatively small size fool you, this massager will get through the strongest of arms and meatiest of legs.

It has a lightweight and slick design and comes with a carrying case so it is easily transportable. Bring it along with you on your next long trip and you won’t have to worry about muscle aches.

Sort of like having your favorite massage therapist with you in a small box.

See the Theragun in action in this release video.

Like the Timtam using the Theragun can potentially increase recovery speed and athletic performance.

The Theragun G3Pro comes with 6 different changeable “massage heads” allowing the user to customize the massage for a more personalized treatment.

What Is New?

In case you are wondering what the improvements were to the G3Pro, here is a short summarizing list:

  • Redesigned gearbox: reduced noise from the motor up to 50 %
  • Battery improvements: battery life extended from 40 to 75 minutes of continuous use
  • Second speed option added: 1750 and 2400 RPM
  • More massage heads included
  • More adjustability to the angle of the massage head
  • Changes have made added a bit of weight (0.5 lbs / 0,2 kg)

Besides all that the visual design of the massager has been completely redesigned. Arguably, it now looks even more slick and futuristic.

Theragun and TimTam Feautures and Specs

To be perfectly honest, the Theragun and TimTam are both great products. They are powerful while being lightweight and will deliver great massages alleviate pain and are therapeutic.

To make better sense of the differences, here is a TimTam vs Theragun rundown of their features and specs. I am going to cover:

  1. Massaging “power” and versatility
  2. The batteries
  3. The design
  4. Pricing
timtam and theragun are both powerful massagers
This is the TimTam in case you did not see the logo.

1. Massaging “Power” and Versatility

Both devices massages with a simple striking motion (standard for massage guns I believe). Both have the stroke length of 6.3″ / 16 mm,

In other words, that length is the difference between when the massage head is at its peak and most retracted.

However, there is a slight difference in the percussions per minute. The Theragun delivers either 1750 or 2400 and the TimTam just 2500.

Personally, I would rate the difference 2400 and 2500 as insignificant, but the Timtam is without the second speed option.

I have read several people explain that the TimTam does seem to deliver a bit more power compared to the previous model G2Pro.

If that is the case here, I would argue that it probably has something to do with the general power of the motors in each device and not the actual percussions per minute.

It should be mentioned that the massagers are noisy when being operated and the TimTam is the most noisy.

Massaging Heads/Tips

Both massagers have the ability to adjust the angle of the massage head at a range of 90 degrees, making it easier to work muscles at different angles especially if you are using it on yourself.

The two can be equipped with different massage heads allowing for a customized experience. This is very helpful as the need for intensity is different from muscle to muscle and besides that pain tolerance can differ from person to person.

However, where the G3Pro includes 6 different heads, the Power Massager only includes one.

As you might have been able to guess extra heads are available for both massagers, but as a separate purchase.

2. Batteries

Both massagers are powered by removable and rechargeable lithium batteries.

However, in terms of battery power and recharge-speed, the TimTam falls short. The G3Pro has a 12V, 2.5 Ah battery vs TimTams 12V, 1.5 Ah battery.

G3Pro will last for about 75 minutes and take the same amount of time to recharge. The TimTam, on the other hand, will last for about 30 minutes of use.

I was unable to find information on how long it takes to recharge the TimTam, but based on the technical specs I would say probably more than one hour. The Theragun charger can charge up to 3.0A at 12 voltage where the TimTam is only capable of half – 1.5A.

I am not a battery technician, but I know that recharge speed depends on more than just the output.

Another point where the TimTam falls short is that it only includes one battery. The Theragun includes two.

Battery power12 V, 2.5 aH (x 2)12 V, 1.5 aH
Est. duration75 minutes30 minutes
Est. recharge time75 minutes60 minutes

3. Lightweight Design

The massagers have a sturdy but lightweight design and weigh about the same. The Theragun is 2.9 lbs 1.3 kg and the TimTam is 2.2 lbs / 1kg.

Regarding dimensions, the Theragun is a bit more compact.

Theragun G3ProTimTam v1.5
Weight2.9 lbs / 1.3 kg2.2 lbs / 1kg.
10.1″ x 8″ x 2.7″ /
25.7 cm x 20.5 cm x 6.8 cm
(L x W x H)
7.9″ x 6.5″ /
20 cm x 16.5 cm
(L x H)

You won’t be breaking your arm when you are working those tough spots, but if you have a smaller build I think you would tire faster using the Theragun.

Both devices come with carrying-cases and are easily transportable. Bring it to work or your gym and I am sure making new friends will be easier πŸ™‚

Although this is a subjective thing, most people would probably say that the Theragun and its carrying case looks a bit slicker or “cooler” than the TimTam. But it is a minor thing.

4. Pricing

The Theragun is a significantly more expensive choice and most people will probably want to get the TimTam because of just that.

But to be fair you would have to take in consideration that the Theragun includes more things that TimTam are selling separately.

Taking that into consideration you can reduce the price difference of an estimated 100 dollars. But you might not find it worth getting all the extras.

An extra massage head or two is probably useful for most, but depending on your situation an extra battery might not be that useful.

Both massagers have a 30-day money back guarantee and are covered by a 12-month warranty.

Customer Impressions

As mentioned earlier, buyers of both products have been absolutely thrilled and surprised by how well they work.

Relieve sore muscles, release scar tissue and muscle knots, speed up recovery and increase performance, all are effects that the customers have praised the massagers for.

You can just take a look for yourself on the customer reviews on major online retailers.

But it is actually more than that, because not only is the Theragun and TimTam recommended by medical professionals and professional athletes, but physiotherapists and chiropractors are buying them to treat their own clients.

The only downside seems to be the high price tag and a bit of noise.

However, if you are frequently going to a massage therapist or chiropractor you should expect to require less frequent visits if you have a massager at home.

From that perspective, it can be a more convenient and cost-effective treatmeant method (even the Theragun).

Making The Buying Decision

When comparing TimTam vs Theragun at a glance, the massagers are not that different. Both should work really well for you.

Because of that, most people will probably want to pick the TimTam due to the big price difference.

But if you need to use the massager a lot and are interested in different massage heads, the stronger battery, better charger and included massage heads could make it worth for you to chose the G3Pro.
